About Dr. Laury Silvers:
The Sufi Mysteries arise out of my desire to talk about the
people and places I researched as a scholar of early Islam and
Sufism beyond the constraints of academic skepticism. They are my
love song to these early pious folk, mystics, and Sufis as human
beings—who lived in a particular historical moment with all its
complications—and to my experience of Islam.
I am a North American Muslim of the Sufi variety and a retired
academic and activist. I received my doctorate at SUNY Stony Brook
in 2002 and taught Religion and Islamic Studies at Skidmore College
and the University of Toronto. I am presently a Visiting Research
Fellow at the Department for the Study of Religion at the
University of Toronto. I live in Toronto with my partner, Michael,
and our dog, Billie Girl, and near my stepdaughters, their
partners, and their mother.
